Songs I Had For Lunch IDLES (DJ Mix)

“These are songs I had for lunch—as in there are things that were on my mind at the time and I was excited by the idea of mixing them,” IDLES’ Joe Talbot tells Apple Music Radio’s Matt Wilkinson about this exclusive mix. The singer has been DJing since his teens and often aims to confound expectations with his sets. “I would like to do more, dare I say, electronic stuff, rather than guitar-based music,” he said. “Because I’ve DJed guitar music for 17 years, and I’ve got chances here and there to do the other stuff. I think because I’m in a band, people are often surprised I can mix.” That explains Talbot’s choice of an opening song here—“Inanimate Sensation” by electro-punk-hip-hop revolutionaries Death Grips. “I started with Death Grips because I had that song in my head and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s kind of got a techno beat,’” he says. “So then it was kind of a techno-y vibe for a bit. And then the middle bit: I was trying to figure out a way of mellowing it out, but keeping the drive and then end on a bigger, bashier finish. Like any good set list or whatever, it’s about a push and pull and giving people the ups, so that the downs feel like real downs and the ups feel like real ups. Expect to hear music from TSHA, Soulwax, Four Tet, and Sir Spyro. I hope you enjoy and I hope you get the energy.”
