Editors' Notes Quebec singer-songwriter Ariane Moffatt has been honing her style of dreamy electro-pop for nearly two decades. When it came time to shake things up, she found a kindred spirit in producer D R M S, aka Étienne Dupuis-Cloutier, who has carved out his place amid Quebec beatmakers who move freely between hip-hop, dance, electronic, and pop. The first EP from SOMMM, the duo's collaborative project, draws both artists into uncharted territory, taking Moffatt’s temperature for hip-hop-imbued textures while bringing a melodic sensibility to D R M S’s production. To make things even more complex, each of these eight tracks features guests from around the province. Montreal groove-pop band Clay and Friends lend an infectious party vibe to “Sunshine.” Rapper FouKi's soulful rhymes gel nicely with Moffatt's pleas to an elusive lover on “Danger.” And over drifting synths on “Chérie,” Moffatt's folk-rocker pal Marie-Pierre Arthur joins her for a wistful meditation on the what-ifs of life and love. It’s a moody, diverse offering that signals an exciting new direction for both of SOMMM’s principals.
