What helped differentiate Tyler Farr from the other male country singers leaning on good ol’ boy relatability in the early 2010s was the way he used his bristly vocal instrument. Nearly a decade on, that’s still his strength. Signed to a new record deal and with production help—with a brawny guitar attack and hard-hitting rock drums—by his friend Jason Aldean, Farr fits several different moods onto this four-song EP. He brings a bit of broodiness to the title track’s small-town boast; delivers the verses of “Soundtrack to a Small Town Sundown” in wistful, modestly ornamented bursts; and conveys tender toughness with his inflections during the steel-sweetened “I Wish Dogs Could Live Forever.”
