On her first proper album, Winnipeg native—and winner of Canadian singing competition The Launch—Olivia Lunny finds herself perpetually torn between the ecstasy and agony of romance, while her eclectic palette of R&B melodies, rap beats, EDM synths, and anthemic pop paints a vivid portrait of the lovestruck mind in all its anxious and euphoric extremes. Lunny is just as convincing playing the nightclub seductress atop the disco bounce of “Who Could Say No” as she is voicing the jealous ex on the deceptively sunny, guitar-driven indie pop of “Sad to See You Happy.” But while even Lunny’s most anguished songs are geared toward dance-floor catharis, closing track “The Walls” channels her heartache into a sombre acoustic ballad that finds its solace up in the clouds.
