Not That Fancy

Not That Fancy

Reba McEntire might be known for her 1990 hit “Fancy”—a modern country standard if there ever were one—but the country superstar reminds listeners that she’s still a down-to-earth Oklahoma girl on this companion to her 2023 book Not That Fancy: Simple Lessons on Living, Loving, Eating, and Dusting Off Your Boots. Produced by Dave Cobb (Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson), Not That Fancy (the album) finds McEntire reimagining some of her best-loved songs via spare, stripped-down arrangements. With such bare-bones production, the collection is a reminder of the power of McEntire’s voice, still one of the most celebrated in the genre. Highlights include “Consider Me Gone,” a powerful hit from McEntire’s 2009 album Keep On Loving You, and “If You See Him, If You See Her,” the 1998 Brooks & Dunn duet that topped the country charts that same year. There’s also “Seven Minutes in Heaven,” the lone new cut on the record, and of course McEntire caps off the record by revisiting “Fancy,” serving up just as much sass and fire as she did on the original.
