Baz Luhrmann’s Parisian musical fantasia is an eye-popping film, but its songs make it a blockbuster unlike any other. Pop’s brightest lights honour earlier hits: Beck gives David Bowie’s “Diamond Dogs” a glitchy reboot, while Bowie himself inhabits the classic ballad “Nature Boy” and Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, P!NK, and Mýa whoop their way through “Lady Marmalade.” But the songs performed by leads Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, particularly the stirring duet “Come What May,” cut through the glitz to give the movie soul.
