The Bodyguard (Original Soundtrack Album)

The soundtrack to 1992’s The Bodyguard couldn’t have started with any song other than Whitney Houston’s reworking of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You.” As the soundtrack’s executive producer, Houston originally wanted to cover the 1966 Jimmy Ruffin hit “What Becomes of the Broken Hearted,” but her costar Kevin Costner suggested she take on Parton’s 1974 ballad. Not only did the song become a household hit—it stayed at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks. Houston’s other selections for the soundtrack include an incredibly sung cover of Ashford & Simpson’s “I’m Every Woman,” as well as the emotional powerhouse “I Have Nothing.” Conversely, the empowering strut of “Queen of the Night” helped set the stage for '90s R&B divas. Other notable tracks include the gripping love song “Run to You” and a rootsy, gospel-tinged reworking of the 1862 Christian hymn “Jesus Loves Me," which contains one of Houston’s most underrated vocal performances.
