Neck of the Woods finally breaks Silversun Pickups from their '90s alt-rock comparisons. Not that they're done exploring (and improving on) that blueprint; the opening “Skin Graph” explodes into a droning indie pop gem worthy of The Breeders. A-list producer Jacknife Lee (Bloc Party, Snow Patrol, Kasabian, R.E.M.) mixes Brian Aubert’s guitars to sound suitably big and heavy. In “Make Believe,” Aubert whisper-sings before slipping into nasal-toned inflections. The standout song “Bloody Mary (Nerve Endings)” is immediately gripping, with a fluttering strobe of distorted tones and blissed-out dream-pop guitars, but it’s the unshakable melody that makes it special. Both “The Pit” and “Dots and Dashes (Enough Already)” work in gloomy post-punk flourishes.
