“This shit off the top...” goes the tag at the beginning of Duvy’s “Thugz Don’t Cry.” “...Like every other track.” We hear this at the top of a few selections on Grasswayz, a body of work steeped in free association. Listen close enough to Grasswayz, Duvy’s first project since 2019’s Jane Babies, and you can almost hear him searching for the next line in his verses. Having made noise locally, the MC was able to refine his style to the point that fellow Toronto-hailing but globally recognized production force Murda Beatz reached out, providing backdrops for the rapper on “Like Me” and “Heaven Gates.” Grasswayz features production from talents a lot less established than Murda Beatz (RicoRunDat and JMG.K9 pop up multiple times), with Duvy just as confident that he can make the careers of others with what he comes up with on the fly.
