Basia Bulat’s impassioned roar of a voice initially brought her acclaim in folk circles, but with Good Advice, she continues her ascent as one of indie pop’s most idiosyncratic artists. The album’s fully realised arrangements were overseen by Jim James of My Morning Jacket, and songs like “In the Name Of” and “La La Lie” pulse and pound like a Phil Spector production, with layers of instrumentation coming together in a perfect storm. In the eye of this hurricane lies Bulat, calling and responding to the sonic swirl with grace and power.
