10 Songs, 40 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Family Man marked a return from hard rock back to country for Waylon Jenning's youngest son. But this isn't country music as you'd hear it anywhere else; this LP includes folky throwbacks, Southern rock barn-burners, and poetic lyrics filled with left turns. "Manifesto No. 4" opens with old-time a-cappella harmonies before bursting forth with strutting organ and fuzzy guitars. "The Long Road Ahead," meanwhile, is a melancholy strummer that recalls late Springsteen, complete with a dissonant solo from part-time E Street member Tom Morello.
