For their seventh album, Tegan and Sara put down their guitars and made a consummate shift to stratospheric synth-pop. It unites the sisters' once-disparate songwriting sensibilities to massive effect: “Closer” and “Drove Me Wild” are dizzyingly euphoric, yet the populist shift doesn’t sacrifice their emotional complexity. “I Was a Fool” is a gorgeous piano ballad, “Shock to Your System” is a dystopian girl-group number, and on “I'm Not Your Hero,” Sara sings candidly about the difficulty of being a queer role model. Deep yet danceable, Heartthrob is one of the finest pop records of the '10s.
