Boogie rock and buoyant harmonies mark this California band’s remarkable first phase from 1971 to 1976. With soulful singer Tom Johnston, they offset sparring chunky guitars (“China Grove”) with sprightly funk rock (“Listen to the Music”) and even shades of Southern gospel (“Black Water”). When the smoky-voiced Michael McDonald took over from Johnston in 1975, the band adopted a slicker, more jazzy feel with the cruisey “Takin’ It to the Streets.”
