5 Songs, 16 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

To hear him tell it, Luke Combs has been let down a lot in his life. “Trucks break down, dogs run off,” he recites in a laundry list of disappointments. But “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” the opening track to this five-song EP, offers a frothy consolation—and provides a good example of the Nashville singer’s sense of humour. The Prequel is a tall cold one to tide us over until his next case of beer-loving tunes is ready. But Combs can do a lot more than rock a drinking song. The range he displayed on his debut LP This One’s for You is still present here: He gets nostalgic on “Refrigerator Door,” and tugs at the heartstrings with the father-son exchange on “Even Though I’m Leaving.” But Combs seems most at home with the tempos up and the wordplay fast—as on the Brooks & Dunn-referencing “Lovin’ On You.”
