Apple Music Home Sessions: Rêve

Apple Music Home Sessions: Rêve

You might say that Montreal dance-pop singer Rêve (aka Briannah Donolo) has a thing for the ’90s. Last year, she released the single “Whitney,” which lifts pretty liberally from Whitney Houston’s “I’m Every Woman.” And for her Apple Music Home Session, she recorded a cover of another pop queen from the era. “Madonna has always been such an inspiration to me,” Rêve tells Apple Music. “One of the first albums I ever remember playing to death as a kid was Ray of Light. I’d go into my mom’s CD cabinet before school, fish the record out of the pile, and pop it into my Walkman. I was obviously too young to grasp the concepts she sang about, but I remember it being the first time I’d ever experienced escapism while listening to music.” Rêve’s own music generally lives within the escapism of the dance floor as well, but her Home Session is a glorious showcase for her vocals, stripping back the songs (which also include “Whitney” and “Tongue”) to their sensual essence, and aided only by strings. “Covering 'Ray of Light,' one of my favourite tracks from childhood, has been such a blast and such a delicious dose of nostalgia.”
