Apple Music Home Session: elijah woods

For elijah woods, the concept of recording at home isn’t that big of a stretch—even before the pandemic, the Ottawa singer/producer enjoyed an extremely short commute to his in-house studio. But for his Apple Music Home Session, he’s downsized his favourite songs into even more intimate dimensions, recasting his 2021 tropical tune “Lights” as a forlorn piano ballad that amplifies the heartache and obsessive desire at the core of the track. “‘Lights’ has always been such a special one to me, and I’ve never had a chance to record an acoustic version,” woods tells Apple Music. His other selections pay tribute to the iconic artists who’ve shaped his hybrid pop/R&B ethos—he strips down Justin Bieber’s heart-racing digital lullaby “Ghost” into a mournful elegy, while his version of Frank Ocean’s channel ORANGE classic “Lost” swaps out the original’s synthy strut for an ambient soundscape framed by slow-motion trap beats. “The chorus of ‘Ghost’ is one of my favourite top lines ever written—the melodies are brilliant,” woods says. “As for ‘Lost’—Frank Ocean is a huge inspiration for me, and I’ve been wanting an excuse to sing a song of his in a low-key downtempo vibe for a while.”
