Soft Machine: Deep Cuts

Soft Machine: Deep Cuts

Soft Machine's album tracks show a tussle between '60s pop and jazz exploration. Traces of soul rave-ups linger in “Save Yourself” and “Memories”, while “Moon in June” is all freak-out organ runs and fidgety drums. The sax filigrees and intense keyboard stabs of “Slightly All the Time” are a high-water mark for austere prog, soon giving way to the Donna Summer disco synths of 1978's “Soft Space”.
