“A cousin told me about being in prison,” Troy Cassar-Daley tells Apple Music, setting the scene for “Till I Get Over You”. “He said it was devastating enough that his missus was having an affair, but it was with his best friend, and they both separately came in to visit him. It was a complicated thing.” The track features on the Gumbaynggirr/Bundjalung artist’s 12th album, Between the Fires. Much of the emotional, raw record stems from his own experiences with loss and grief—including the death of his parents and his troubled marriage—and this track tells the story of another man’s journey while dealing with the same, albeit in a personal context. “I could hear the anger in him,” Cassar-Daley recalls. “He felt like running his car through his house and burning it to the ground. Those were his initial thoughts.” Later, though, his cousin found resolve. “He said, ‘It just became a part of life. When I got out, I realised that I was not meant to have those people in my life anyway.’ Besides, he didn't particularly like jail and didn't want to end up back in there. He's now so well-adjusted and has stayed out of trouble. When stuff like that happens, I guess it just turns you into a different person.” Listen to “Till I Get Over You” on FIRST, the playlist showcasing the best, freshest music from First Nations artists across Australia.
