Amy Shark: Favourite Aussie Songs

“I think everyone knows by now that I'm a rather intense human and I am drawn to emo, moody songs that make me feel something,” Amy Shark tells Apple Music. The singer-songwriter’s handpicked playlist of her favourite Australian songs is exactly that: big emotions, big melodies—music that makes her feel. “Every song I put on a playlist means something to me,” she says. “Most of these are songs that have made me reflect on a time, or a place, or a person, or a memory that means something to me. Most are melancholy—I’m not necessarily a sad person, I'm just attracted to moody songs.” Below, she talks more about highlights from her selections, from memories of first hearing them to songwriters she loves. Silverchair, “Miss You Love” “I've been obsessed with Silverchair since the very beginning. I watched every interview Daniel [Johns] did. I remember him saying people started playing 'Miss You Love' at their weddings and he laughed and said, ‘If they only knew the song is actually about not being in love, not believing in love and not caring about it.’ I thought that was the coolest thing I'd ever heard.” Missy Higgins, “Any Day Now” “I saw Missy Higgins play at the Troccadero in Surfers Paradise [in 2001]. She had just won triple j Unearthed and I had just started playing in a band. After watching her, I went home with this weird feeling of excitement—I knew I had all these songs but I was too scared to sing them on my own. She totally inspired me to go for it.” Japanese Wallpaper, “Between Friends” “I was very much 'between friends' myself when I heard this song. Needless to say, it hit pretty hard. I think Gab [Strum] is an incredible Australian producer and songwriter.” Archie Roach, “Took the Children Away” “I was lucky enough to be asked to sing with Archie at the Commonwealth Games [in 2018], and I was so incredibly nervous, but he calmed me right down. Archie has a way of making people feel warm and loved. His presence is so peaceful and addictive. I love all his songs, but this one in particular makes me want to burst into tears. I think it's important to let yourself feel those emotions when listening to special songs like this one.” Julia Stone, “Dance” “I still think this is one of the sexiest songs I've ever heard. I’m obsessed with Julia's music; she has such a unique voice.”
