INXS Essentials

Though their history spans more than three decades, INXS are synonymous with the ‘80s, uniting all the divergent sonic strains of the era—New Romantic, arena rock, brass-blasted robo-funk—into one slick, sexy package. Tying it together was the late Michael Hutchence, a magnetic frontman cut from the classic Jagger/Morrison mould. While early breakthroughs such as “The One Thing” kept pace with New Wave contemporaries like Duran Duran, by 1987's omnipotent Kick, the Aussies had minted their own singular style of deviant dance pop (“Need You Tonight”) and gothic gospel balladry (“Never Tear Us Apart”).
