Starting his music career while in his late teens, hip-hop artist Mishlawi cultivated a style as defined by its smooth flows as its dusty, laid-back productions. Living in London after growing up in Portugal, Mishlawi first drew attention when he uploaded his song "Street Jargon Freestyle" to various online platforms in 2014. From there he signed to Bridgetown Records on the strength of an enthusiastic recommendation from Portuguese reggae star Richie Campbell, and he released a series of warmly received singles like the Chick Corea-sampling "All Night." Tarik Mishlawi was born in 1996 and raised in Arizona before relocating with his family to Cascais, Portugal as a teenager. He was interested in music at a very young age, playing drums at age five and eventually picking up guitar. After a stint at college in the states, he relocated to London and began releasing original songs under the name Mishlawi on SoundCloud and YouTube in 2014. After a chance encounter with Portuguese reggae singer Richie Campbell, the two became friends and eventually Campbell encouraged his label, Bridgetown Records, to take on his young protege. His 2016 song "All Night" was built around a particularly Latin-flavored Chick Corea sample and became his most visible track to that point, racking up millions of views and streams. He followed with a string of similar video/track releases for songs like "Always on My Mind," "Boohoo," and "Limbo," all of which were collected on an eponymous 2018 EP release. ~ Fred Thomas
