About Suhail Yusuf Khan

Indian musician Suhail Yusuf Khan emerged in the 2010s as a modern master of the sarangi, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, sarangi legend Ustad Sabri Khan. Through a wide range of collaborations across rock, classical, jazz, fusion, and folk, he forged a unique path, eventually teaming up with Scottish folk singer/guitarist James Yorkston and British bassist Jon Thorne to release a series of acclaimed albums as Yorkston/Thorne/Khan. His formal training on the instrument began at the age of eight and he would play his first concert just three years later. Well-versed in classical and other Indian musical traditions, Khan has spent much of his career branching out into other genres, joining the popular New Delhi-based fusion rock band Advaita when he was just a teenager. Over the coming decade, he continued to work with a variety of musicians including producer Talvin Singh, rock guitarist Steve Vai, violinist Patsy Reid, and accordionist Hannah James. In 2016, Khan joined eclectic songwriter Yorkston and jazz double bassist Thorne to form the collaborative trio Yorkston/Thorne/Khan. The group made its debut on Domino Records with Everything Sacred in the spring of that year. The trio quickly returned the following year with its follow-up LP, Neuk Wight Delhi All-Stars. Reuniting for a third outing with Yorkston and Thorne, the group opened 2020 with Navarasa: Nine Emotions, an album devoted to interpreting the nine emotions involved in Indian classical dance and arts. ~ Timothy Monger
