About Lundi

The sheer number of nationally renowned artists, politicians and religious leaders who mourned Lundi Tyamara’s untimely death in 2017 from abdominal tuberculosis serves as a lasting testament to the musician’s towering legacy. Born in South Africa’s Boland region in 1978, Lundi was one of the most inspired and distinctive gospel vocalists of his generation. Initially serving as a backup singer for the legendary Rebecca Malope (popularly known as the African Queen of Gospel), he struck out on his own in 1998. Solo success came swiftly for this truly charismatic personality, whose big, warm smile was nearly as famous as his music. Over the course of 10-plus albums and countless concerts throughout South Africa, he innovated a style of gospel that showcased his R&B-infused vocals, sprightly percussion and infectious vitality. Songs such as “Mphefumlo Wami” and “Inkos’ Iyayazi”, released in 1998 and 2008 respectively, were more than just popular hits; they were anthems for young South Africans searching for their own identity in the Christian faith.
