Formerly lead vocalist with progressive jazz rock act Affinity, Hoyle embarked on a brief solo career in 1971, possibly hoping to follow a similar path to that of Christine Perfect who had recently departed from Chicken Shack. Pieces Of Me was a superb showcase for the singer’s dynamic style. Aided by guitarist Chris Spedding and Karl Jenkins (oboe), Jeff Clyne (bass) and John Marshall (drums) from Nucleus, Hoyle exhibited her grasp of a wide range of material, notably through interpretations of Laura Nyro’s ‘Lonely Women’ and Nina Simone’s ‘Backlash Blues’. She opted to leave music following her marriage to Pete King, former musical director to saxophonist Ronnie Scott. This credible recording was fetching huge sums in recent years on vinyl, sought out by record collectors of the Vertigo Records label. The album was finally issued on CD in 2002.
