Dollar Brand

About Dollar Brand

Abdullah Ibrahim is a South African pianist who fully incorporates the sound of his spiritual heritage into a jazz context. Inspired greatly by Duke Ellington (who sponsored his first session in 1963), he became dedicated to the transformative power of jazz. He has recorded consistently potent and affecting work in the decades since, using African and American performers together. His original name before converting to Islam, Dollar Brand, came from American soldiers, from whom he would constantly ask to buy jazz records.
