Bhundu Boys Essentials

Zimbabwe's Bhundu Boys were enjoying national success when they were spotted by Champion Doug Veitch in 1985. Signing their music to his Discafrique label in the UK, their guitar sound—which they called jit—fitted a music scene where jangle was king. However, a deal with WEA may have led to a Madonna support slot but it also birthed two unsuccessful albums. Member disputes and commercial failure would destroy the band, with members later succumbing to poverty, AIDS and, in the case of frontman Biggie Tembo, suicide. Their music, however, burns as brightly as ever—explore it here.
