Exploring the music of Within Temptation is a lot like walking into a Gothic cathedral, the interior of which only grows more complex and immense with each step closer to the altar. Founded by guitarist Robert Westerholt and singer and composer Sharon den Adel, the concept-driven Dutch group largely specialize in symphonic metal laced with neoclassical choruses and church music-inspired solemnity. Yet Within Temptation possess a curious streak as well. Stepping far outside the boundaries of heavy metal, they have recorded audacious experiments in New Age music and electronic dance pop.
