Poppy represents the post-everything digital world, in which genre is an ancient concept—and so is being human. From the start, the viral video star turned android-like industrial-pop phenom played off her own microcelebrity, kicking off her 2017 debut album with the cutesy “I’m Poppy”, a nod to Harajuku-era Gwen Stefani in which she coyly coos, “I’m your internet girl.” She’s since become so much more, between the futuristic electro-pop thrillers of 2018’s Am I a Girl? (featuring guests Grimes and Diplo) and 2020’s caustic yet catchy genre-smashing manifesto I Disagree, highlighted by the Grammy-nominated metal thrasher “BLOODMONEY”.
