Overmono Essentials

When Ed Russell first got turntables at 11, he swiped records from brother Tom, a DJ 10 years his senior; little did they know they’d eventually become a celebrated bass-music duo. Tom got his start making hard techno as Truss in 2007, in his mid-twenties, and Ed fell into dubstep a few years later as Tessela. But once they joined forces as Overmono—named after their Welsh hometown, Overmonnow—in 2015, their collaborative output quickly took precedence. Their sound is a seamless blend of their sensibilities, mixing the wallop of ’90s rave with the precision of drum ‘n’ bass and the euphoria of a carefully chopped R&B refrain. After a string of scene-defining anthems like “So U Kno” and “Bromley” (with Joy Orbison), the brothers dropped their 2023 debut LP, Good Lies, an exhilarating summation of their exceptionally emotive approach to the dance floor.
