The Andy Martin Quartet

b. 10 August 1960, Provo, Utah, USA. Martin was born into a highly musical family in which his father played trumpet and two brothers, Stan and Scott, played trumpet and saxophones respectively. He took up the trombone and while still a youth with his siblings formed a band, the Martin Brothers. At Golden West College he studied with saxophonist-band leader Tom Kubis and he also attended California State University, Long Beach. His professional career began in earnest playing in a dixieland band at Disneyland, and at 18 he recorded with Dick Berk and two years later toured with Lou Rawls. Two years after that he was regularly playing with Los Angeles big bands, and he also toured with various artists including Paul Anka, Poncho Sanchez, Joe Walsh and Les Brown. By the start of the 90s Martin was in demand as a concert and recording artist by many band leaders, including Vic Lewis, Dave Grusin, Horace Silver, Clare Fischer, Louie Bellson, Jack Sheldon, Frank Capp, Matt Catingub, Bill Berry and Bill Holman, appearing on the latter’s late-90s releases, A View From The Side and Brilliant Corners. He also appeared with pop artists such as Prince, Neil Diamond and Lionel Richie. An immensely talented musician with a remarkable technique, a flowing style and an abundance of creative ideas, Martin is one of the outstanding trombone talents of his generation. However, he has never allowed his technical mastery and intellectual commitment to overpower the emotional expressiveness that marks all great jazz musicians. At the end of the 90s, with his reputation spreading around the world, he is one of the artists best placed to carry the creative flame of jazz into the new century.
