About Scott Weiland

Scott Weiland may be best known as the mercurial frontman for ‘90s legends Stone Temple Pilots, but the rest of his catalogue deserves just as much acclaim. Born in 1967, Weiland fell into the SoCal music scene in the mid-’80s, eventually forming STP in 1989. Unlike the grunge groups dominating the charts, the band brought glam, grit and pure rock ‘n’ roll to ‘90s alternative, thanks mainly to Weiland’s fiery wail and charismatic stage presence. Following the band’s 1996 album, Tiny Music...Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop, Weiland stepped out on his own, unleashing his 1998 solo debut, 12 Bar Blues. The album—full of dazzling art-rock twists and turns—showed off Weiland’s full range as a singer and musician. He wouldn’t release another solo collection until 2008’s Happy In Galoshes because he was occupied fronting supergroup Velvet Revolver (featuring members of Guns N’ Roses), who dropped a pair of hard-rock heavy hitters with 2004’s Contraband and 2007’s Libertad. After stepping away from Velvet Revolver, Weiland rejoined STP for 2010’s self-titled sixth album, the band’s last with the original lineup. Weiland remained active—releasing more straight-up rock albums with Art of Anarchy and The Wildabouts—until his death in 2015 from an accidental overdose, a tragic, premature silencing of one of rock’s most formidable voices.
