About Mississippi Matilda
Matilda Powell, who performed under the name Mississippi Matilda, married multi-instrumentalist Eugene Powell, who performed under the name Sonny Boy Nelson, in the 1930s, and the couple, along with Willie Harris, Robert Hill, and members of the Mississippi Sheiks, traveled to New Orleans in 1936 to record for Bluebird Records. Matilda recorded four sides during the sessions, including her signature song, "Hard Working Woman." She and Powell separated in 1952, and she moved to Chicago with their six children. Those four sides from 1936 remain her entire recorded legacy. ~ Steve Leggett
