Essential Albums
- With injections of ’60s girl-group panache and trippy funk, En Vogue’s second album recalibrated R&B, creating a fresh template for the genre in the ’90s. From the jazzy, doo-wop-style refrain of “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” to the classic-rock swagger of “Free Your Mind”, the wide-ranging sounds and hippie-ish vibes of Funky Divas have a loose-limbed openness that transcends the boudoir jams of the era’s contemporary soul scene.

About En Vogue
With their old-school flair, pristine harmonies and sexy, self-assured attitude, En Vogue were among the most popular R&B groups of the ’90s. • The original quartet was formed in 1989 by the Oakland-based production duo Foster & McElroy, who envisioned a girl group that would evoke the heyday of Motown. • With their 1989 debut single, “Hold On”, En Vogue notched their first of six No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. The song also crossed over to No. 2 on the Hot 100. • En Vogue’s blockbuster 1992 album Funky Divas yielded three Top 10 hits and earned four Grammy nominations, including Best Rock Performance By a Duo Or Group for the guitar-driven single “Free Your Mind”. • In 1993, En Vogue teamed up with Salt-N-Pepa for a cover of Linda Lyndell’s 1968 soul gem “Whatta Man”. The remake reached No. 3 on the Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group. • En Vogue returned in 2018 with their seventh album, Electric Café, their first project in 14 years.
