As the earliest centres of Christian hymnody and the Syrian Chant repertoire, Damascus and Aleppo are cradles of Arabic classical music with legendary godfathers like Farid El Atrache, Sabri Moudallal and Sabah Fakhri. Nor should Syria's contribution to Arabic pop be underestimated with modern icons like Asala, Mayada El Hannawy and George Wassouf. We explore one of the oldest and most authentic musical heritages of the Arab world.
