Turnpike Troubadours Essentials

The fraying country rock of Turnpike Troubadours seems to be perpetually set in late summer, on one of those melancholy afternoons when appreciating a warm day means admitting to yourself that it may be one of the last. Their 2010 track “7 & 7” exemplifies this aesthetic, invoking the wistfulness of Uncle Tupelo or early Wilco with a melancholy fiddle and lyrics about running into an old flame in the middle of a shop. The gothic “Gin, Smoke, Lies” even opens with lyrics about “the early autumn wind”, the song's harsh fiddle and pained lyrics suggesting a murder ballad without the deed ever being done.
