A band from Iceland in the ‘80s may as well have come from the moon. The Sugarcubes—a loose art collective at their onset rather than a proper band—were the first of their countrymen to enjoy any meaningful success in Europe and America, hitting nerves and heartstrings with a 1987 single that featured Björk's otherworldly voice and a gorgeous arrangement. The song hinted at other joys on their debut LP Life's Too Good, but the band never duplicated their early success, and Björk left in the early ‘90s for a solo career and global fame.
