Talk Talk's early albums showcase the full intensity of Mark Hollis' potent croon. Their Bowie-influenced mix of synth-pop and funk, as on “Does Caroline Know” and “Have You Heard the News”, creates a maudlin and uptight backing for his passion and fervour (“Give It Up” being particularly fiery). And it never lets up, no matter how free and spacious (“New Grass”) their music was to become.
