Soulfly Essentials

Brazilian-born Max Cavalera's main gig since departing Sepultura in the mid-'90s, Soulfly initially gave his ex-band's jungle-percussion thrash a rapcore revamp. They've since thickened their groove metal into a ferocious mix of death, industrial, and hardcore, frequently atop a globe's worth of polyrhythms. Sitars and flamenco guitars sneak in, songs like “Babylon” and “Bleed” rampage reggae-style, and it's often hard to believe only one dude's drumming. Above it all, Cavalera screams hellfire and brimstone about terrorists, cannibals, and sinners of many stripes.
