Psychobilly Essentials

Although psychobilly’s original rumblings can be heard in lively ’60s garage rockers and rockabilly outlaws, the genre revved up and fully roared to life thanks to The Cramps. In the late ’70s, the NYC-via-Ohio group—fronted by impossibly cool married couple Poison Ivy and Lux Interior—smeared together gritty blues and surf licks with rousing punk antagonism and a dash of B-movie horror allure. That template charted the genre’s course for decades to come, as psychobilly bands flourished in Europe (Nekromantix) and the U.S. (Tiger Army) amid support from loyal fans and labels such as Hellcat Records.
