Scottish hard rockers Nazareth only had one hit single in America, but it was a memorable one: “Love Hurts,” their cover of a lesser-known Everly Brothers song, featured an over-the-top emotive vocal from Dan McCafferty; some consider it the first real metal ballad. Their run of hits was much longer in the UK, with both covers and originals like the rowdy shout-along “Hair of the Dog.” The band remained an institution in the UK, celebrating their 40th anniversary in 2008. McCafferty announced his retirement in 2013 due to health issues, but Nazareth continue with singer Carl Sentence.
