Main Essentials

One of the first post-rock groups, Main melted the psychedelic sounds of space-rock and shoegaze into all-consuming drones. Launched in 1991 by two former members of Loop, the group abandoned riffs and rhythms for an eerie wall of noise that had more to do with dark ambient music than guitar-based rock. With the departure of guitarist Scott Dowson in 1996, the more experimentally inclined Robert Hampson took control, and while there are still traces of the group's signature droning style in his austere soundscapes, he's steadily pushed Main into the realm of avant-garde electronic music.
