Mingus was more than a powerful bassist. He let loose his boisterous piano style on the albums Oh Yeah and Mingus Plays Piano, and his theatricality came out on the poetic, spoken-word part in the bluesy “Freedom”. In works like “Meditation (For a Pair of Wire Cutters)” and “Taurus in the Arena of Life”, the composer brought avant-garde and classical harmony into dialogue with driving swing.
