Celeste: Visionary Women

Londoner Celeste is a singer in the mould of classic jazz and soul vocalists. So it’s no surprise that the songs she’s chosen for her International Women’s Day playlist point directly to her influences. “Something I love about Nina Simone is how she lives by truth,” Celeste tells Apple Music of Simone's “Four Women”. “She’s also not scared to tell those stories which are unheard. This song does that, speaking about the nuance in the experiences of these women.” Modern but no less classic, Solange’s “My Skin My Logo” also features prominently here. “For me, this song speaks of how we should proudly wear the skin we’re in, and how important it is to reinforce those ideas,” says Celeste. “This song does it playfully with subtlety. The message is subliminal and perhaps sinks further into the subconscious than we realise when first listening to it.”
