About Soozie Tyrell

b. USA. Singer and violinist Soozie Tyrell has guested on many artists’ albums over the years, but it was not until she began playing with Bruce Springsteen in the 90s that she finally began receiving recognition for her talents. The daughter of an Army officer, Tyrell and her family constantly moved throughout the USA when she was a youngster (in addition to periods in both Italy and Taiwan), before her parents separated. Picking up the violin, Tyrell learned her craft well, and decided to relocate from Fort Myers, Florida to New York City during 1977. Almost immediately, Tyrell became involved in the north-east music scene, and played in a variety of local bands. Through one of these bands, Tyrell met vocalist Patti Scialfa, resulting in the pair teaming up together in groups, and also as touring members of Southside Johnny And The Asbury Jukes. During the 80s, the two friends musically went their separate ways, Scialfa landing a spot with Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band as a backing singer, and Tyrell fronting her own New York band, the Wild Blue Marlins. Although the Wild Blue Marlins had a few close calls with regard to signing record deals, the band eventually fragmented before issuing any albums, but Tyrell became a very much in-demand session player. Tyrell almost joined up with Springsteen in 1988 for his tour in support of Tunnel Of Love, but when the gig fell through, she landed spots with Buster Poindexter, live gigs with Elvis Costello, and sat in with the Saturday Night Live Band for two seasons. When Springsteen decided to take a break from the E Street Band during the early 90s and form a new group, Tyrell finally landed a gig with the singer, appearing on albums such as 1992’s Lucky Town and 1995’s The Ghost Of Tom Joad, plus 2002’s E Street Band reunion album, The Rising, in addition to various tours. As well as performing with Springsteen, Tyrell also appeared on Sheryl Crow’s 2002 release, C’Mon, C’Mon, and the following year issued her solo debut in the roots rock mould, White Lines, that featured guest appearances from both Springsteen and Scialfa.
