About Michael Yonkers
Way-ahead-of-his-time Minneapolis legend Michael Yonkers wore many freakish hats: noise and home recording pioneer, psych-folk troubadour, unhinged performer, and electrician. In the late '60s, Yonkers modified his equipment, invented pedals, and experimented with tape loops and homemade synthesizers to create a truly eerie garage-psych sound. His 1968 debut, MICROMINIATURE LOVE, a searing epic of proto-noise and pedal dementia, presaged Sonic Youth's guitar thrashings by a decade plus. After a failed deal with Sire, Yonkers disappeared into obscurity while still recording highly experimental music in his parents' basement. A severe spinal injury suffered at work further hampered his career in 1971. Reissues on De Stijl and Sub Pop led to an '00s renewal of interest that found him recording again and playing his most-high profile shows yet.
