Since forming in 1999, The National have painted their signature brooding sound in many different shades of gray. Their big indie hits aside, the band's catalog is full of other rich nuances: the gritty post-punk of "Theory of the Crows"; the dusky Americana twang in "It Never Happened"; and the string-soaked swells of "Vanderlyle Crybaby Geeks," all refined by Matt Berninger's husky baritone.
