The Coup Essentials

The Coup Essentials

The Coup make the funkiest political hip-hop music you'll ever hear. Based in Oakland, the group is headed up by Boots Riley, whose firebrand rhymes make calls for social change as he speaks to the underdogs and frustrated revolutionaries of the world. 1993's Kill My Landlord and the next year's Genocide & Juice outlined the group's fusion of rabble-rousing lyrics with production that always keeps it bouncing, while Pam the Funkstress provides sassy cuts. Adding depth to the discography, 2012's Sorry to Bother You saw the group trading samples for live instrumentation.
