Rocé Essentials

This Algerian-born wordsmith grew up in Val-de-Marne, a suburb of Paris that teemed with hip-hop culture in the '90s. His break as a rapper came in the shape of collaboration with Manu Key and DJ Mehdi. Rocé's solid delivery, surly tone and conscious lyrics cut through tenacious beats with astonishing fluidity. Following many features and freestyles in the late '90s, Rocé dropped his debut album in 2003. Top Départ was a portrait of hardcore hip-hop, ghetto struggles and profound meditations. It crystallised his talent in a long form format—and paved the way for a major career.
