Founded by two former members of Operation Ivy, Rancid put a rough but catchy spin on the vintage sound of late '70s punk, throwing plenty of bouncy ska hooks into their pogo-era anthems. Powered by the driving basslines of Matt Freeman and the dual-guitar attack of Tim Armstrong and Lars Frederiksen, the Californian outfit became stars during the punk-goes-mainstream explosion of the mid '90s in America. Despite scoring a number of radio hits, the group have stuck to their original rawness, keeping the full-throttle spirit of old-school punk alive in the process.
