Molchat Doma Essentials

Despite being formed in 2017, Belarusian trio Molchat Doma would have been right at home in the ’80s among the icy, gothic post-punk and dark wave of Joy Division and The Cure. As with the best of that era’s bands, the skeletal sound of their compositions—austere drum machines, lo-fi production and chiming guitar hooks—exudes substance in its rawness, like the spontaneous magic of a basement jam session. The filtered, reverb-coated vocals of Egor Shkutko add another enticing, noirish layer. Hypnotising, hazy and brooding, tracks like “Танцевать” and “Тоска” seduce with every play.
